Canes, Walkers and Scooters
Spring is finally here, and with the warmer weather and sunshine, it’s time to get outside for some fresh air and exercise! Try companion walking using walking poles or a cane for stability. Over the winter, many of us have lacked exercise and the stimulation needed to keep muscles in shape, but now is a great time to start thinking about a new walking route or who would like to join you on your outdoor schedule.
Walking poles and canes are beneficial for people of all ages. The arm movement that follows pole action adds upper body exercise. Using poles and canes improves balance and stability and help you maintain proper posture in the upper back. If you are new to using a cane, good technique goes a long way in helping maintain balance and posture. Hold your cane in the hand that’s opposite to the side that needs support and position it about 2 inches forward. Move the cane forward in syn with your step forward with your unaffected leg for rhythm. The more you practice walking with your cane, the more confident you will become and the more you will enjoy your walking routine.
If you are using a walker, stand tall and place your hands onto the hand grips. Roll the walker forward and take a small step forward. Walking slowly at first will improve your safety as you get used to your mobile device. Because of the small wheels on the front supports of some walkers, rocks and debris can be a problem but smooth surfaces like cleared landscape paths work perfectly for outdoor exercising.
